NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims to have identified proceeds of crime to the tune of Rs 212 crore in 12 terror funding cases of which properties worth Rs 59.5 crore have been attached.

The agency has claimed that it has identified 52 such properties purchased from such funds.

In a related development, the agency Thursday filed a charge sheet against controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik on charges of money laundering in a Mumbai Court.

ED claims to have identified proceeds of his crime totalling over Rs 193 crore. Of these, Naik’s assets worth Rs 50.46 crore have been attached.

These include investment in mutual funds, Islamic international school in Chennai, 10 residential flats, three godowns, two buildings and land in Pune and Mumbai.

ED had initiated investigation based on a criminal case registered by National Investigation Agency (NIA).

ED has claimed that Naik’s organisation, Islamic Research Foundation (IRF), received over Rs 64 crore between 2003-04 and 2016-17 from various dubious/suspicious/unknown sources. Majority of the funds were utilised for organising ‘peace’ conferences.

The agency said that Rs 49.20 crore was received during 2012-16 from Zakir Naik’s accounts maintained in United Arab Emirates to his personal accounts in India.

ED has found that Naik was building high-end bungalows in Dubai.

The agency is probing the source of his income in UAE. Naik transferred these funds to India and purchased properties in Mumbai and Pune by layering of funds in the name of his close relatives. Naik was also involved in suspicious unaccounted cash transactions, ED has said.
